How to Get Around Northern Territory

Getting Around

Fly between the ends. Darwin to Alice Springs is 1,500 km and roughly 15 hours of driving; the flight is two. Only drive it if the Stuart Highway itself is the trip.

A car is essential locally, and in Kakadu and the West MacDonnells a 4WD opens most of what is worth seeing. Standard hire cars are not insured on unsealed roads — check before leaving the bitumen, because the exclusion is real and routinely enforced.

In the wet, roads close. Kakadu's southern access, Jim Jim and Twin Falls, and much of Arnhem Land are simply unreachable. Check daily rather than assuming.

Fuel stops can be 200-300 km apart. Carry water, tell someone your route, and never leave a broken-down vehicle.

The Ghan runs Darwin-Alice Springs-Adelaide as a journey rather than transport.
