Costa Rica packs an extraordinary density of biodiversity and landscape into a country roughly the size of West Virginia -- rainforest, active volcanoes, cloud forest, and coastline on both the Pacific and Caribbean, often just a few hours' drive apart.

The country's own "pura vida" philosophy -- a genuine, unhurried approach to life -- shapes the travel experience as much as the scenery does: Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948 and now generates the vast majority of its electricity from renewable sources.

Wildlife-watching here is genuinely exceptional relative to the country's small size -- sloths, howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, and sea turtle nesting sites are all realistically accessible within national parks designed to make that access easy.

Costa Rica has built its entire tourism identity around ecotourism, and it largely lives up to that reputation -- roughly a quarter of the country's land is protected in national parks and reserves. Sticking to marked trails, hiring certified local guides, and never feeding wildlife keeps that record intact.

Popular destinations like Manuel Antonio and Monteverde see real crowding in peak season -- travelers seeking a quieter visit may prefer the shoulder "green season" (May-June or November), or a quieter reserve over its most famous counterpart.

Sea turtle nesting beaches, particularly at Tortuguero, have strict rules around lights, noise, and photography during nesting season -- following a certified guide's instructions exactly protects a genuinely vulnerable, multi-decade conservation effort.

Costa Rica runs on two seasons rather than four. The dry season (December-April), locally called verano ("summer") despite the Northern Hemisphere calling it winter, is the most popular and reliable time to visit -- sunny, less humid, and the peak season for both the Pacific coast and wildlife-watching, though also the most crowded and expensive window.

The green season (May-November) brings the country's rainy months, typically short, heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain -- a genuinely good time to visit for lower prices, thinner crowds, and lusher, greener landscapes, particularly in Guanacaste and the Central Valley.

The Caribbean coast, including Limón and Tortuguero, runs on its own separate rhythm, with a brief additional dry spell around September-October when the rest of the country is at its wettest -- worth checking region-specific forecasts rather than assuming the whole country shares one calendar.
