Cansignorio della Scala

Cansignorio ruled Verona from 1359 to 1375, in the late period of Scaliger power, and is remembered as much for how he took the lordship as for what he built with it: he came to sole rule by having his brother Cangrande II killed, and later had his remaining brother killed too.

His public works were substantial. He improved Verona's water supply and fortifications, and the family's castles across the territory were strengthened in his time. The Scaliger habit of building fortified strongpoints at the edge of the territory — Soave among them — is the physical record of a dynasty holding a mainland state by force.

He is buried in the Arche Scaligere, the family's Gothic tomb complex in Verona, beneath the most elaborate monument of the group, which he commissioned for himself before his death.
