Bohemia Region Guide

Overview

Bohemia is the largest of the states that make up the Czech Republic and is home to the world famous and spectacular city of Prague. It comprises two-thirds of the entire country and home to more than half of the total population of the Czech Republic. The western region of Bohemia is completely surrounded by the country of Germany. The country of Poland borders the northern region of Bohemia, while the regions of Moravia and the country ofAustria to the east and south respectively.

The region of Bohemia has been classified as one of the historic regions of the Czech Republic. This should not come as a surprise. After all, Bohemia had been under numerous empires that have sprung during this region. Initially under the Moravian Empire, the region of Bohemia had also been under the Franks and the Holy Roman Empire. It is for this reason that Christianity is the predominant religion being observed in this region. The history of Bohemia is filled with various intervals of being dominated by other empires and being allowed to rule as an autonomous state.

It is for this reason that the region of Bohemia is a popular destination for travelers who enjoy learning a bit of the past of other countries. One of the top historical tourist destinations in this region is the town of Litoměřice. This historical town is known for the vast marvelous Baroque architecture, many of which were constructed under the watchful eye of the 18th century architect Ottavio Broggio. Another historical town to visit in Bohemia is Plzeň which is located in the western part of Bohemia. Apart from the different spas that could be found in this historic town, it is also known for its spectacular old square located at the center of the town.
