Luxembourg Country Guide

Overview

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small country in Europe that is landlocked. It is surrounded by Belgium, Germany and France. Luxembourg has huge banking industry and is considered to be a tax haven. The inhabitants of Luxembourg mainly speak French, German and Luxembourgish, which is a German dialect.

Luxembourg was occupied during both the World Wars despite the fact that it had declared neutrality. It tried to escape the German influence and in an effort towards it, Luxembourg economically united with Belgium in 1921. The country was the founder member along with Belgium and Netherlands of the customs union in 1948. It became a part of the European Union in 1957.

The main industries here are that of steel, chemicals and rubber. Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in the world and measures about 2,586 km sq only. In the north side Ardennes lie which is a region of extensive forests and rolling hills interspersed with old mountains. The southern part of the country or the Gutland, comprises of the Luxembourg plateau, rocky terrain and dense forests.

The main tourist attractions are the Wenzel Walk through the old quarters of Luxembourg, which allows you to take a look into the city’s rich cultural history. The National Museum of Military History offers a view into the famous Battle of Bulge. The Butterfly Garden in Grevenmacher contains numerous butterflies flying between the exotic species of tropical plants. Moselle Valley in Luxembourg is famous for its dry white wine.

Findel Airport is the international airport and Luxair is the National Airline.
