Moldova Country Guide

Overview

The country of Moldova is located in the central region of Europe and in between the countries of Romania and Ukraine. This country has had its own share of invasions and sieges. For many decades, the country of Moldova had been under the rule of other countries. In 1812, for example, Moldova was known as Bessarabia and considered as an annex of the then-powerful Russian Empire. More than four decades later, it fell under the rule of Romania. It was only in 1991 when the country of Moldova gained its independence and became a country of its own. A year later, it became a member of the United Nations.

Because of the number of times that Moldova had become a part of other countries, the country has a rich culture which was highly influenced by these countries and its neighbors as well. This can be seen in the beautiful architecture that could be found all over the country, particularly among the churches and monasteries. These infrastructures hold some of the finest examples of Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox arts.

If you are planning a trip to Moldova, make sure that you visit the medieval town of Orhei. This beautiful town has been considered as a museum complex by the locals. It has been called such because travelers are able to find ruins left behind by the different civilizations that have once thrived in this country. You can still find whole examples of infrastructures and buildings that date as far back as the 5th century BC.
