The city of Madrid is the capital of Spain. Recognized as the largest of all the cities in the country, Madrid is also the third most populated city in the entire European Union right behind London and Berlin. Situated right in the heart of Spain, Madrid is home to the Spanish monarch and the political center of the country. It is also considered as the center of financial activity not just of Spain, but the entire Iberian Peninsula region.
Madrid is a city where the modern perfectly blends with the old. Travelers going around the city would find themselves going through avenues of modern-day infrastructures and skyscrapers and then turn towards a quaint neighborhood where historical buildings still stand to this day.
There are so many sights and places to visit in Madrid. One of the most popular tourist destinations is the Royal Palace of Madrid. Located on Bailén Street on the western part of the city, the palace is generally opened to the public except during certain occasions when the monarch visits to hold state banquets. The history of the palace dates back during the 10th century when it was constructed by Mohammed I who was the Emir of Córdoba. The palace is beautifully decorated with rich tapestries and fine pieces of art made by some of the renowned artists such as Juan de Flandes and Goya. Tourists and locals are also treated to view exquisite examples of furniture and artifacts which date as far back as the 11th century.
