Practical Information for visiting Civita di Bagnoregio

Civita is genuinely awkward to reach without a car, which is part of why it is quiet outside coach hours. The nearest railway station is Orvieto, about twenty kilometres north on the Rome-Florence mainline, with a bus connection to Bagnoregio that runs a handful of times a day and not at all on some Sundays. Viterbo is about thirty kilometres south. By road it is around two hours from Rome and an hour from Siena, and Rome’s airports are the usual gateways. Check the Orvieto bus timetable before relying on it.

Crime is effectively a non-issue here. The risks are entirely physical and geological.

The bridge is long, steep at the Civita end, fully exposed and can be very windy. In summer heat it is the most likely place for someone to get into difficulty, and there is no shade or water on it.

The calanchi are unstable ground. The cliff edges around and below the town are actively eroding, and marked paths exist because the unmarked ground is genuinely dangerous. Rockfall occurs, particularly after heavy rain.

Streets inside the village are cobbled, steep and slippery when wet, and the town is not accessible to wheelchairs or comfortable with a pushchair. The bridge and town can close in severe weather.

No vaccinations or special precautions are needed and tap water is safe to drink. There is no pharmacy in Civita itself; the nearest is in Bagnoregio.

The nearest hospitals are at Viterbo and Orvieto, both under an hour away. Note that an ambulance cannot reach Civita: a casualty inside the town must be brought out across the bridge, which is a genuine consideration for anyone with limited mobility or a heart condition.

The practical risks are heat and dehydration on the bridge crossing in summer and falls on steep wet cobbles. Carry water, because there is little to buy once you are across.

Give Bagnoregio and the bridgehead as the reference point rather than an address inside Civita — vehicles cannot cross, and responders come in on foot.
