Practical Information for visiting Mantua

Mantua is on regional lines rather than the high-speed network, which is the main thing to plan around. Verona is the practical gateway, about forty minutes by train and itself on the fast line to Milan and Venice. Modena is around an hour, Bologna about two, and Milan roughly two hours with a change. The nearest airports are Verona and Bologna, with Bergamo and Milan’s airports further out. Driving is straightforward — the A22 runs close by — and the flat terrain makes the province unusually good for cycle touring.

Mantua is a quiet provincial city with low crime, and there is little to warn about beyond ordinary care with bags around the station and the markets.

Bicycle theft is the one genuinely common offence, unsurprising in a city this dependent on bikes — lock a hire bike properly and do not leave it overnight on the street.

Winter fog on the surrounding plain reduces road visibility severely and is the main driving hazard. In summer, mosquitoes from the lakes are persistent enough at dusk to be worth planning for.

The lake paths and riverbanks are unlit in places and the water is deeper and colder than its still surface suggests.

No vaccinations or special precautions are needed and tap water is safe to drink. Pharmacies are throughout the centre with a rota for nights and holidays.

Mantua has a general hospital, and larger facilities are in Verona about forty minutes away. EU and UK visitors should carry a valid EHIC or GHIC.

The practical considerations are summer heat and humidity, which is heavier here than the temperature alone suggests because of the lakes; mosquito bites in the evening; and winter air quality, which is poor across the Po basin during long settled spells.
