Pollenzo
Pollenzo historical timeline
Last updated on October 14, 20262nd century BC. Pollentia, the Roman city, was founded. It was already cited by Pliny the Elder.
402. Pollentia was the theatre of the battle of Pollenzo. The troops of the Visigoths, commanded by Alaric, were defeated near the city by the Roman general Stilicho and obliged to retreat into Illyria.
A caution about the main literary source. Claudian, in De Bello Gothico, celebrates the victory — but as the record itself notes, he fuses into a single glorious event the victory of Gaius Marius over the Cimbri at the Raudine Plain in 101 BC and that of Stilicho over the Goths half a millennium later. He does name Pollenzo, which is what the citation establishes.
1832–1848. The King of Sardinia Carlo Alberto di Savoia promoted a great transformation of the borgo of Pollenzo and of its castle, with the objective of creating a model estate aimed at experimentation and the improvement of agricultural and oenological activity.
9 May 1946. Vittorio Emanuele III, King of Italy, after abdicating, assumed the title of Conte di Pollenzo.
1986. Slow Food was founded in Italy, campaigning for the right to pleasure and to food that is good, clean and fair.
2004. Slow Food co-founded the Università di Scienze Gastronomiche at Pollenzo, with support from the Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna regions, and it has had its seat at the Agenzia complex ever since.
