  1. late 13th century, probably the 1280s, into the early 14th — the palace is built together with its tower.
  2. its first phase — the building serves as the Palazzo del Podestà, and the lower part is used as a salt store.
  3. then — it becomes the Palace of Justice, with the prisons inside it, and finally the Palazzo Comunale.
  4. — Siena surrenders on 17 April, and part of the Sienese take refuge at Montalcino, giving life to the Repubblica di Siena riparata in Montalcino.
  5. 1555–1559 — during that exiled republic the lower part of this building is converted into the seat of the mint. A state without a capital strikes its coinage in a former salt store.
  6. — Montalcino and its fortress surrender on 31 July, and the Republic of Siena ends.
  7. after the fall to Medici rule — the building is made to register the new regime: the lower part is transformed into a loggia, a statue of Cosimo I is placed just outside it, and the tower is raised by some courses of brick.
  8. until the end of the 19th century — this is where the captain of justice, the judge, the notary and the grand-ducal vicar administered justice.
  9. the 1930s — the structure is completely restored, with numerous modifications and the reopening of the windows of the two facades.
  10. a few decades ago — it ceases to be the town hall when the municipal seat moves to premises in Piazza Cavour, where the Comune di Montalcino is still based today, at Piazza Cavour 13.
