Asolo Geography

The town sits at about 190 metres on a hill in the Colli Asolani, the belt of low hills between the Piave and the Brenta where the Prealps give way to the plain.

What makes the site remarkable is that the hill stands slightly forward of the range, so the views are unobstructed in almost every direction -- Monte Grappa to the north-west, the Dolomites beyond on clear days, and the plain running south past Treviso toward the lagoon.

The Rocca occupies the summit at 310 metres, with the walled town on the shoulder below it, and the modern settlement spread on the lower slopes.

The surrounding hills are farmed in the old mixed pattern -- vines, olives, cherries, woodland -- rather than given over to monoculture, which is part of why the landscape looks the way it does.
