Best destinations by month
May, June and September are the best months: warm, the sea usable, and neither the summer beach crowd nor the winter closures.
July and August fill Sottomarina completely with Italian holidaymakers. The old town stays comparatively calm even then, which is the useful thing to know.
Winter is cold, damp and often foggy, and Sottomarina largely shuts. The old town keeps working -- the fish market does not stop -- and this is when Chioggia is most itself and least visited.
Acqua alta can flood the lowest streets between autumn and early spring, as in Venice.
