How Was Verona Built
The Arena, completed around 30 AD, was built using local pink-tinged limestone, and originally had an outer ring almost entirely lost to a 12th-century earthquake -- what survives today is mostly the inner structure, which explains why the Arena looks slightly different from Rome's own Colosseum despite a similar design. Its scale (an elliptical amphitheater seating tens of thousands) required an engineering approach -- radiating vaulted corridors distributing weight outward -- that Roman builders had by then refined across the empire.
The della Scala family's building projects, concentrated in the 13th and 14th centuries, were defensive first: Castelvecchio was built as a fortress-residence directly on the Adige, with its own fortified bridge (Ponte Scaligero) built specifically as an escape route rather than a public crossing, wide enough for the family to flee on horseback if the city itself turned against them.
Much of what looks oldest in Verona today is, in a literal sense, a 20th-century rebuild: retreating German forces destroyed every bridge across the Adige in 1945, including the Roman-era Ponte Pietra and the Scaligeri's own Ponte Scaligero. Both were reconstructed using the original stones, recovered from the riverbed where they'd fallen, rather than new material -- a decision that makes them genuine restorations rather than replicas, even though neither bridge is, strictly speaking, standing continuously since the era it represents.
