How to Get Around Poland

Getting in. Warsaw Chopin is the main airport, with Kraków, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Poznań and Katowice all well served by European routes.

Trains. PKP Intercity runs fast, comfortable services between the main cities — Warsaw to Kraków in about two and a half hours on the Pendolino. Book ahead for the cheapest fares. Regional services are slower and cheap.

Buses. FlixBus and regional operators cover routes the railway does not, and are often the better option for the mountains and the east.

In cities. Trams, buses and, in Warsaw, a two-line metro. Tickets are time-based and must be validated; city bike schemes are widespread and cheap.

Driving. Motorways are modern and some are tolled. Rural roads can be narrow and are shared with agricultural traffic. Headlights must be on at all times, day and night, and the blood alcohol limit is effectively zero.
