How to Get Around Warmia-Masuria

A car is the practical choice. The region is large and thinly settled, the castles and lakes are scattered, and public transport between small towns is infrequent.

Getting in: Olsztyn-Mazury airport has limited services; most people drive or take the train from Warsaw to Olsztyn, around three hours, or to Elk and Elblag.

By boat is the characteristic way to travel. Chartered yachts and motor cruisers are available at Gizycko, Mikolajki and Wegorzewo, bareboat or skippered, and scheduled passenger boats link the main lake towns in summer. A licence is not required for most inland motor craft up to a certain power, but check.

Kayaking the Krutynia river over several days is a classic Polish trip, with operators moving your luggage between stages.

Cycling suits the region, and the Green Velo route passes through.
