Colombia lies in the northern part of South America. It is part of the colony, French Guiana. The Andes Mountain Range dominates western Colombia. Colombia produces about 60% of the world’s emeralds. It has huge reserves of coal and gold. The recent discovery of oil allows Colombia to be self sufficient in energy.

Once upon a time, Colombia had been considered as one of the economical gateways of South America. It has also been one of the parts of one of the Incan Empire, which has been known as the most powerful empire during the Ancient world in this side of the earth. Its richness in natural resources has attracted the Spanish Inquisition to invade this region. In fact, it has been said that the country was named after Christopher Columbus, the same man who discovered America. It has been considered as one of the prized jewels of the Spanish crown and many historians have attributed Columbia as being the major contributor to the glory of the Spanish empire in the New World.

Colombia has been one of the world’s largest producers of the finest coffee beans in the world. Coffee is grown in thousands of small farms.
