How to Get Around Vatican City

You walk. The state is about half a square kilometre and there is no internal transport for visitors. The whole visit is on foot, and the distance from the museum entrance around the walls to the basilica is about a fifteen-minute walk — worth knowing, because the two entrances are on opposite sides.

Getting there is a Rome question. Ottaviano and Cipro on metro line A are each a short walk away, and numerous buses and tram 19 stop nearby. From Termini it is about twenty minutes.

There is no airport and the state’s railway station handles only freight and the occasional ceremonial train. You arrive in Rome and travel in from there.

Accessibility: the basilica and most of the museums are step-free with lifts, and wheelchairs can be borrowed free at both. The dome climb is not accessible above the roof terrace.

Security screening at the basilica is airport-style and is the main queue; the museums screen separately.
