Keep a little mystery in your trip planning: Explorer Picture Mode shows a stylized version of every place instead of the real photo, so you can go by the description and reviews first and picture it your own way -- reveal the real photo any time by flipping the switch off, or just for one place at a time from its own page.

Venice

Venice Culture

Changed

Venice's wealth as a trading republic funded one of the most influential schools of painting in European history -- Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese all worked in the city, developing a distinct emphasis on color and light that set Venetian painting apart from Florence and Rome. Much of that work remains in the churches and scuole it was originally painted for, rather than having migrated to museums elsewhere.

Carnevale, Venice's pre-Lenten festival of elaborate masks and costumes, dates back to the medieval Republic, when masks let people of different classes mix anonymously in public. Suppressed for a period after the fall of the Republic, it was revived in the late 20th century and now draws visitors from around the world each February.

The city's craft traditions -- Murano glassmaking, Burano lace, and mask-making workshops in the historic center -- remain active livelihoods, not just tourist demonstrations, though genuine artisan work now competes with imported imitations sold under the same names. Venice is also home to La Fenice, one of Italy's leading opera houses, and to the Biennale, a major recurring international exhibition of contemporary art and architecture held across the city.

Everyday food culture centers on bacari, small bars serving cicchetti (bite-sized snacks) alongside wine by the glass -- a more casual, standing-room tradition distinct from formal restaurant dining, and one of the more accessible ways for a visitor to experience how Venetians actually eat.
