Why visit Aruba the smart way
Aruba is the Caribbean's dry, safe, sunny exception. It sits south of the hurricane track, with about 500 millimetres of rain a year, a trade wind that never stops, and a beach the island calls its widest that is open to everyone. A national park covers a fifth of the land, where the lava holds a tide pool and the cactus holds an endemic rattlesnake. It is also Dutch in law, American in dollars and customs preclearance, and Papiamento in speech.
The main travel issue
The high-rise strip at Palm Beach, drug-route violence that both advisories mention and neither expects visitors to meet, unmetered taxis, and an entry card to file before you fly.
The solution
Stay at the low-rise end of Eagle Beach or in San Nicolas, ride the US$2.60 Arubus rather than hire a jeep, and give Arikok a full morning before the heat.
Best destinations by month
January–February -- the northern winter high season and Carnival, when the Canadian advisory notes petty crime rises; the trade wind steady and the sea calm on the west.
March–April -- still peak, the driest weeks, the park at its most walkable early in the morning.
May–June -- the shoulder: warmer, quieter and cheaper; the hurricane season opens in June but the island lies south of the track; Dera Gai on 24 June.
July–August -- hot and windy, the summer crowd from North America, and the sea at its warmest.
September–October -- the rainy season begins in September by the geography article's account, though Aruba stays dry even then; the quietest hotels; the two early-stage hurricanes of 2020 came in this window.
November–December -- the season returning, the hurricane months ending in November, and Dande sung in the last week of the year.

How to experience Aruba
If you travel slowly
Base at Eagle Beach, the wide public beach behind the low-rise resorts, and learn the island by bus: the Arubus day pass covers Oranjestad's tramway street and the run to San Nicolas at the south-eastern end, where the refinery town keeps its own Carnival tradition and the calmer beaches begin.
If you want to see the essentials
Arikok National Park, 34 square kilometres and a fifth of the island since 2000, for the Conchi natural pool in its pillow lava -- reached on foot, by horse or by four-wheel drive -- the caves, and Jamanota, the island's highest hill; the California Lighthouse of 1914–16 at Hudishibana on the north-western tip, the tallest structure on the island; the Alto Vista chapel above the north shore near Noord; and Oranjestad's Caya Betico Croes with its tram.
If you seek local character
Papiamento on the radio and the bus, Dande sung at New Year, Dera Gai on 24 June, a Carnival that began as San Nicolas's victory parade after 1945, and a Catholic majority whose chapel at Alto Vista is the island's oldest shrine.
If you want to go beyond the obvious
The north-east coast's cliffs, caves and small natural bridges, battered by the open sea; the gold-mining ruins of the 19th century inside the park; the Hooiberg cone at 165 metres in the middle of the island; and the south-east beyond San Nicolas, where the reefs are and the hotels are not.
Where to find authentic cultural and historical character
Aruba is the Dutch Caribbean's separatist: an island that left the Netherlands Antilles on 1 January 1986 under Betico Croes's Status Aparte movement to become a country of its own inside the Kingdom, and that runs itself in Papiamento -- a Portuguese-and-Spanish-based creole with Caquetío, Dutch, West African and English words -- while writing its laws in Dutch. English and Spanish have grown with tourism and immigration; about two-thirds of the population was born on the island; and roughly three-quarters is Catholic, with the chapel at Alto Vista as the shrine.
The economy made the culture twice over. The Lago refinery at San Nicolas, built in 1924 and once among the largest in the world, brought workers from across the Caribbean and gave the south-east its English-speaking, Carnival-keeping character; when refining faltered, the tourist board founded in 1947 built the second economy on the western beaches, and the island now has one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean. The two Arubas -- refinery-town San Nicolas and resort-strip Palm Beach -- are twenty-five kilometres and a century apart.
The manners are relaxed, multilingual and law-minded: ID must be carried, drugs are punished severely, taxis are agreed in advance, and the divi-divi tree, bent by the trade wind, is the national emblem.
Responsible travel tips
Aruba's environment is dry, small and heavily used, and the island has answered by putting a fifth of its land in a national park: Arikok, 34 square kilometres established in 2000 across the north-eastern lava hills and limestone terraces, home to the endemic cascabel rattlesnake, Baker's cat-eyed snake and Aruban whiptail lizard, the shoco burrowing owl and the prikichi parakeet. The park's own site did not answer for its rules, so the general ones apply: stay on the marked tracks, which the four-wheel-drive tours erode; do not touch or feed the wildlife; and leave the Conchi pool's turtles and its lava alone.
The arid landscape is not only climate but history -- the Spanish colonisation's deforestation and exploitation are on the record -- and the goats are still at it. Water is precious on an island with 500 millimetres of rain, and the resorts of Palm Beach consume most of it.
Spend away from the strip: San Nicolas, the low-rise end of Eagle Beach, the park's guided walks, and the bus at US$2.60 rather than a rented jeep on the north coast.
