Bremen Region Guide

Overview

Bremen is a city in Germany (Deutschland) which sits in the northwest. Bremen is a port city about 60 km (37 mi) from the North Sea. A lot of people confuse Bremen with the city of Bremerhaven. Both are separate cities but they do share the same state which is Bremen (official name: Freie Hansestadt Bremen). Bremen is the second largest city in North Germany and 10th overall.

Many famous sights can be found in the Alstadt (old town). The oldest part of the Alstadt is the southeastern part half of the town which begins with the Markplatz and ends at the Schnoor quarter.

Some of the famous sights and attractions found in the Alstadt:

Schutting – This building built in the 16th century was one of the first buildings in Bremen to be restored after War World II by the citizens themselves.

The Markplatz – This market was erected between 1405 and 14010. Today the Markplatz is host to many restaurants with the original décor. One of the famous restaurants is “The Ratskellar in Bremen” which boasts wine lists of more than 600 wines.

Cathedral St. Petri – This cathedral was built in the 13th century and sits east of the Markplatz. Sculptures of Moses, David, Peter, Paul, Charlemagne and Christopher Maki can be found here.

The Liebfrauenkirche (Our Lady Church) – This church is the oldest church in town (11th century). Several murals from the 14th century sit inside the church and have proved very popular with tourists as well as the locals.

Bremen has an international airport which is south of the city. There are also tramway and bus services. The public transportation services are top notch in Germany which allows traveling the country to be performed with little ease. You will find that traveling around Bremen will not be difficult.

There are many famous people who have lived in Bremen. Sven Regener (musician and writer), Kai Warner (pop artist), Henry Bohlem (American Civil War Union Brigadier General) and Harald Genzmer (composer of contemporary classical music).
