Thuringia is one of the Free States that comprise the country of
Germany. Situated in the heart of the country, the state of Thuringia shares its borders with the states of Lower Saxony, Bavaria, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Hesse. It is the sixth smallest of the sixteen federal states of the country and has the fifth smallest population in the country.

Established by the widow of King Heinrich I in 961, the cathedral is a remarkable example of early Gothic monuments and Romanesque architecture designs. Another must-visit tourist destination is the castle of Schwarzburg. Built during the 12th century, the castle had once been the home of the Count of Schwarzburg. Today, the castle is a museum and boasts a magnificent collection of artworks, relics and the ancestral portraits of the entire dynasty that had once ruled the land.
Thuringian Forest is perhaps the best what nature lovers can get. They lie between Thuringia and Franconia and encloses some of the most attractive valleys and glens.
