The South Aegean region, located just right outside the southeastern coast of the Greek mainland, is one of the thirteen regions that make up the country. The region is comprised of two groups of islands: the Cyclades islands which are the group of islands closer to the Greek mainland and the Dodecanese islands.
The Cyclades islands are the more popular of the two groups of islands that make up the South Aegean region of
Greece. This should come not as a surprise. After all, the Cyclades group of islands is home to some of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. One of this is the island of Mykonos. Surrounded by the islands of Tinos, Siros, Paros and Naxos, the island of Mykonos has been named after one of the sons of the god Apollo and had once been an island completely consecrated to the god during the ancient times. Today, the island of Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan islands in Greece. During the day time, tourists enjoy the warm waters and white sandy beaches that could be found all over the island. At night, the island comes alive with its bustling nightlife fuelled by nightclubs and bars that remain open until the wee hours of the morning.
Another popular tourist destination in the South Aegean region is the island of Santorini. Popular for its pristine white buildings and houses situated on the cliff sides, the island is a popular honeymoon destination for newlywed couples who are captivated by the beauty of the surroundings and the glorious seascape and sunsets. Because the island’s rich volcanic soil, it is also home to a growing wine industry in the country.
