The region of Sicilia,
Italy happens to be the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Home to the active volcano Mount Etna, Sicily has a large fertile plain just below. Many small islands like Ustica and Eolie surround Sicily. Most of the Sicilian population lives on the coastal areas.
Sicily is heavily into agriculture. The main production is that of citrus fruits, vegetables and almonds. The mineral resources like sulfur, natural gas and petroleum are present here in abundance. The tourism industry in Sicily is fantastic due to the stunning beaches and many art centers. Here one can also find relics of the Greek and Saracen civilization. Sicily’s position was so strategic that it was a center of attraction for many powers and was invaded and occupied by different rulers.
Castello di Mussomeli is a world famous monument here. This monument is also known as Chiaramontano. It was built by Manfredi III in the year 1370. Inside the castle one can find frescos, portal and rooms for barons. The Castello Ursino in Catania, was built by Fredrick II of Swabia dynasty in the year 1240. When Mount Etna erupted in 1669, its lava surrounded the castle. Even though the castle remained undamaged, its military operations got spoiled. Now there is a civic museum present here. Monreale Cathedral is yet another significant monument here. It was built by Norman William II in 1174. The Regional Museum of Messina consists of various sections of art and crafts. One can find the Statue of Neptune here that was sculpted by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli.
