Siberia Region Guide

Overview

Siberia is the largest of all the regions that comprise the country of Russia. It is also one of the largest regions in the world, with the region of Siberia making up 10% of the Earth’s total land surface area.

When travelers hear the name of the region, they would often picture a vast, desolate place with freezing temperatures and barely any signs of life other than the prison camps that hold Russian prisoners. Although some parts of Siberia can be extremely cold in winter, this is far from the reality for other parts of the region. In fact, Siberia is a region that is teeming with life and color. In many ways, Siberia is one of the last frontiers for the adventurous traveler. Those who have trekked in this region come home with a whole new image of this region. Much of the Eastern part of the region is filled with lush forests which are ideal for many outdoor activities such as camping and hiking. There are also a number of different lakes which not only serve as great places to enjoy canoeing sailing. Siberia is home to Lake Baikal, which is the deepest lake in the world. Many diving tours and packages are offered to outdoor enthusiasts, giving them access to the hidden treasures beneath its depths.

The region of Siberia has been extremely important in the fields of science. One of the top tourist attractions in this region are its museums. Perhaps the most popular of these museums is the Mammoth and Permafrost Museum in the city of Yakutsk. This ultra-modern looking building showcases complete fossils of mammoths that had once roamed the Earth during the last Ice Age. The museum also provides visitors an insulated and protected access to underground galleries where they would be able to view the permafrost.
