Fort St George is the fortified coastal settlement from which British power expanded in southern India and around which modern Chennai developed. Founded in the seventeenth century, it remains a working government and military precinct rather than a preserved ruin.
The most accessible historical focus is the Archaeological Survey of India's Fort Museum, housed in the former Exchange building. Its galleries use arms, uniforms, paintings, documents, coins and Company-era objects to trace the fort's political and commercial world.
St Mary's Church and surviving colonial buildings broaden the visit, but security and government use limit free movement. Come for a layered institutional landscape, not an uninterrupted rampart walk.
Architecture
The fort is an ensemble, not one castle. Defensive walls enclose offices, barracks, church, museum and government buildings from different periods.
Low military geometry dominates. Bastions and ramparts were designed for artillery and coastal defence rather than picturesque height.
The Fort Museum occupies a civic-commercial building. Its restrained classical façade, verandas and regular openings reflect the Exchange's institutional purpose.
St Mary's is more intimate. Thick walls and a simple rectangular form belong to an early phase of permanent construction inside the enclosure.
How it was built and evolved over time
The first enclosure combined trade and defence. Warehouses and offices stood behind walls built to protect a coastal factory.
Earthworks and masonry grew into bastioned fortifications. Expansion responded to artillery, European rivalry and the settlement's increasing political weight.
Buildings were repeatedly reassigned. The Exchange building later became the Fort Museum, while other structures continue to serve government and military purposes.
War altered the fabric. Capture, recovery and eighteenth-century rebuilding changed the plan beyond the modest 1640s fort.
Protection now coexists with active use. Conservation cannot treat the precinct as an empty monument because it remains part of Tamil Nadu's administrative centre.
