Landour
Discover Landour
A concise introduction to Landour, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Landour is a small Himalayan cantonment joined to Mussoorie in Uttarakhand. Visitors come for Lal Tibba, the Char Dukan junction and wooded ridge walks, but the settlement is defined just as strongly by homes, churches, schools and defence-estate land. Its lanes preserve the scale of a nineteenth-century military and educational outpost rather than that of a formal resort centre.
The best experience is slow and mostly on foot. Views open toward the Doon Valley and higher Garhwal ranges, then disappear with forest, cloud or the turn of a road. Treat this corner of India as a living community: arrive early, keep vehicles and noise under control, and distinguish public stops from private compounds.

Frequently asked questions
Is Landour separate from Mussoorie? It is contiguous with Mussoorie but has a distinct cantonment history and administration on the higher eastern ridge.
How long should I allow? Most visitors need half a day for a focused upper-ridge walk. A full day allows a slower circuit and lower Landour without rushing the gradients.
What are the essentials? Char Dukan, Lal Tibba and the public ridge roads form the clearest first visit. Churches, schools and old houses should be approached according to current access, not assumed open.
Do I need a car? Use road transport to reach the correct starting point, then walk. A car is less useful for moving between close upper-ridge stops.
When is the best time? April, October and November give the strongest overall balance. May and June are milder but busier; July and August need the most rain and road flexibility.
Is it accessible for limited mobility? Much of Landour is steep, with uneven edges and limited pavements. Ask for a route-specific assessment before booking.
Can I enter Woodstock School or every old house? No. They are functioning or private places unless the institution explicitly announces public access.
What is the emergency number? Dial 112 and give a precise landmark and map pin.
