Capri Island

Discover Capri Island

A concise introduction to Capri Island, its geography, history and culture.

Introduction

Capri is a steep limestone island at the western entrance to the Gulf of Naples. Visitors come for sea caves, cliff paths, Roman imperial sites and a landscape that moves quickly from harbour level to Monte Solaro. The island's compact size is deceptive: gradients, stairs and sea conditions govern how it is experienced.

Two municipalities share the island. Capri town rises above Marina Grande and contains the Piazzetta, Certosa and eastern archaeological routes. Anacapri occupies the higher western plateau, with Villa San Michele, the Monte Solaro chairlift and paths toward the Blue Grotto and Punta Carena. Seeing both gives a truer picture than treating Capri as one harbour excursion.

Frequently asked questions

Is Capri one town or the whole island? The destination page covers the island. Capri and Anacapri are separate municipalities with different centres, services and local calendars. Marina Grande belongs to Capri and is the main passenger port.

How many days does Capri need? One day can cover one town and a few major sites. Two or three nights allow both municipalities, one substantial walk and a weather-dependent boat trip without forcing everything into the ferry-arrival window.

Can I bring a car? Usually not during the main visitor season. The 2026 decree restricts most non-resident, rental and foreign-plated vehicles from 30 March through 2 November, with another restriction over New Year. Exceptions exist, so read the current decree.

Does the Blue Grotto open every day? No. Entry depends on sea conditions and the low cave mouth can become unsafe. Check the official operator on the morning of the visit and keep another plan ready.

Is Capri suitable for limited mobility? Parts are manageable with planning, but steep lanes and stairs remain common. ATC offers a pre-booked accessible vehicle. Confirm every hotel's entrance and each attraction separately; island-wide accessibility cannot be inferred from one successful transfer.

Which transport ticket is useful? ATC publishes single and daily bus fares, while the funicular has its own service information. A day ticket can suit repeated bus transfers. Buy before boarding when possible, and remember that onboard ATC payment is digital only.
