Alatri Culture
Alatri's identity is built on continuity of place rather than continuity of power.
The Hernician inheritance is the deepest layer, and the most visible. This was an ancient city of the Hernici, part of a league with Veroli, Anagni and Ferentino formed around 550 BC against the Volsci and the Samnites — a regional alliance of hill towns that lost to Rome and kept its masonry.
The ecclesiastical layer is almost as long. After the empire fell, the only respected authority here was the Christian bishop; in the twelfth century the town became an important papal stronghold when Rome itself was unsafe; and it ended under papal suzerainty after 1434.
There is a Benedictine footnote that connects it to the rest of the region: the monastic community founded here under Theodoric was one of the most ancient in the West, and Benedict stayed in it briefly in 528 — between Subiaco and Montecassino.
And the modern town is a working provincial comune of twenty-seven thousand people, with a megalithic acropolis in the middle of it that it has never had the option of ignoring.
