Alatri

Practical information for visiting Alatri

Connectivity & Internet

Alatri sits in the Latin Valley, the corridor that has carried traffic between Rome and the south since antiquity.

Frosinone is the provincial capital, and one of the towns Alatri itself conquered during its medieval expansion.

Anagni, Ferentino and Veroli are its historic peers — the three towns with which it formed the Hernician defensive league around 550 BC.

Abruzzo lies immediately beyond the Ernici, which form the natural boundary.

Collepardo, Guarcino, Trivigliano and Vico were among its medieval conquests and remain its neighbours.

Rome lies north-west along the valley.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Alatri is an ordinary, safe provincial town and normal Italian precautions are enough.

The hazards are at the acropolis: an unfenced megalithic circuit standing to about nine metres, on a hill, with no shelter. Drops are real and the stone is uneven.

Winters here are described as very cold, running from mid-November to mid-March, so ice on hill streets is a genuine seasonal risk.

Summer on the open acropolis is exposed, with August averaging a maximum of 29.2 °C.

In the Ernici above the town, treat the ground as Apennine upland; parts of the comune rise above 1,000 metres.

Health considerations

No unusual health risks apply in Alatri.

The climb to the acropolis is the physical demand: the town is built on a twin hill and the megalithic circuit is at the top of it, on uneven ground with no step-free route around the walls.

Summer is manageable — the hot season runs mid-June to mid-September with August averaging 29.2 °C — but the acropolis is unshaded.

Winter is the harder season here than in most of Lazio: long and very cold, from mid-November to mid-March, with January the coldest month.

Medical facilities are those of a comune of twenty-seven thousand, with Frosinone and Rome the referral directions. EU visitors should carry an EHIC or its replacement; others should have travel insurance.

Emergency information

The single emergency number across Italy is 112, reaching police, ambulance and fire.

At the acropolis, give the gate or postern nearest to you as a reference — the circuit is large and unfenced.

In the Ernici above the town, where the comune rises above 1,000 metres, give your altitude and ask for mountain rescue if needed.

Hospital care is available in the province, with Frosinone the nearest referral and Rome beyond.

In winter, note that the hill streets and the acropolis approach can be icy during the long cold season.
