Bomarzo's calendar is small, and the garden dominates it.

Spring and autumn are the visiting seasons, when the Sacro Bosco is comfortable and the woodland around it is at its best.

Weekends in those seasons are when the garden fills, drawing visitors from Viterbo, Rome and far beyond.

Summer is hot in the Tiber valley, and the predominantly barren landscape of the grove offers limited shade — mornings are much better than afternoons.

Village feasts run in a comune of 1,700 people, around the Orsini castle at the edge of the densely built town.

Winter is cold — zone E, 2,120 degree-days — and the grove is at its most atmospheric and least comfortable.

Checking what is actually on. Regione Lazio publishes a region-wide events calendar on its VisitLazio portal, listing festivals, sagre and historical re-enactments by comune and by date. Local feast days move with the liturgical calendar and small-town programmes are often fixed only weeks ahead, so confirm there rather than relying on last year's dates.
