Bracciano's attractions are a castle, a lake and the towns around its rim.
The Castello Orsini-Odescalchi is the set piece: a particularly well-preserved medieval castle crowning the hill, grown out of a twelfth-century tower later absorbed into a fortress built by the Prefetti di Vico.
The lake below is the second. Lake Bracciano is the eighth largest in Italy and widely used for sailing, with shoreline inside the Bracciano-Martignano regional nature park.
Around the water are Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano, two medieval towns on the same lake, which together with Bracciano make a circuit rather than a single destination.
And the smaller lake of Martignano, protected within the same park, lies just east of Bracciano's own water.
