Caprarola

Practical information for visiting Caprarola

Connectivity & Internet

Caprarola is connected by road and by very little else, which suits a village of five thousand.

Viterbo is the provincial capital and the nearest rail hub, with the bus connections that serve the town.

Rome lies south along the Cassia.

Lake Vico is immediately west, in the same volcanic range.

Ronciglione shares both the Cimini setting and the late settlement history — stable occupation here began only around the eleventh century for both towns, because of the Selva Cimina.

Bomarzo and Bagnaia complete the circuit of great gardens in this province.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Caprarola is a quiet village with no particular security concerns, and normal Italian precautions are enough.

The hazards are the ordinary ones of a steep hill town: the village is perched on a tufa spur, the streets climb, and surfaces are slippery in wet weather.

Winters are genuinely cold here by Lazio standards — climate zone E, 2,343 degree-days — so ice is a real possibility on the slopes.

Driving is the only practical way in and out, on the roads between the Cassia and the Flaminia, which are ordinary provincial roads through wooded hills.

In the Cimini and around Lake Vico, treat the woodland as proper hill country.

Health considerations

No unusual health risks apply in Caprarola.

The gradient is the practical issue: the village is perched on a tufa spur on the southern slope of the Cimini, and the palace stands above it, so a visit involves climbing.

Summer is more comfortable than on the Lazio plain because of the altitude, which is a genuine advantage for anyone travelling in July or August.

Winter is cold for the region, in climate zone E with 2,343 degree-days.

Medical facilities are those of a small comune; Viterbo is the referral direction, with Rome beyond it. EU visitors should carry an EHIC or its replacement; others should have travel insurance.

Emergency information

The single emergency number across Italy is 112, reaching police, ambulance and fire.

In the village, note that the streets of a tufa-spur hill town restrict vehicle access, so response into the upper lanes is slower than a map suggests.

In the Cimini hills and around Lake Vico, give your position by landmark rather than address.

Hospital care means Viterbo, with Rome the onward direction for anything specialist.

Winter ice on the village slopes and on the approach roads is the most likely cause of an ordinary accident here.
