Castel Gandolfo Events

Castel Gandolfo's calendar turns on whether the pope is in town.

Summer is the papal season by four hundred years of tradition, resumed in July 2025 when Leo XIV stayed six weeks. When a pope is in residence the town's rhythm, security and visitor numbers all change, and the Angelus draws a crowd into the main square.

2026 marks the four hundredth anniversary of Castel Gandolfo as an official papal residence, counted from Urban VIII in 1626.

Weekends from spring to autumn bring the Roman day-trip crowd up from the city for the lake and the Castelli Romani food and wine — the single biggest influence on how busy the town feels.

Rowing remains a fixture on Lake Albano, where the Stadio Olimpico built for the 1960 Rome Olympics still stands on the shore.

Religious feasts centre on the collegiate church of San Tommaso da Villanova, Bernini's parish church on the main square.

Checking what is actually on. Regione Lazio publishes a region-wide events calendar on its VisitLazio portal, listing festivals, sagre and historical re-enactments by comune and by date. Local feast days move with the liturgical calendar and small-town programmes are often fixed only weeks ahead, so confirm there rather than relying on last year's dates.
