Gaeta

Practical information for visiting Gaeta

Connectivity & Internet

Gaeta's position between Rome and Naples has been its defining connection since antiquity.

Rome is 133 kilometres north; Naples 96.5 kilometres south.

The Via Flacca runs west along the coast towards Sperlonga and Terracina — in Roman times the extension of the Appian Way that linked Caieta to the capital.

Formia adjoins to the west, and in 840 its inhabitants fled here for fear of the Saracens.

The Gulf of Gaeta itself is the wider frame, running from the Circeo promontory to Capo Miseno.

And the port remains an active connection in its own right: a fishing harbour and a NATO naval base.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Gaeta is a safe Italian coastal city with a military presence; normal precautions suffice, plus the usual care over valuables on busy summer beaches.

Do not photograph or approach the naval base. NATO has a base here and it is not a visitor site.

The hot season from 17 June to 13 September brings sustained heat, with August averaging 30 °C by day; the muggy summer the sources describe makes midday exertion harder than the figure suggests.

Monte Orlando is a genuine hill with drops to the sea on the seaward side.

In the water, swim from supervised beaches: this is an open Tyrrhenian gulf.

The walls and the old town have the usual uneven historic surfaces.

Health considerations

No unusual health risks apply in Gaeta.

Heat and humidity are the main seasonal issue. The hot season runs 17 June to 13 September, August averages 30 °C by day and 20 °C at night, and the sources describe summers as muggy as well as hot — so shade and water matter more than the temperature alone suggests.

The terrain splits the town: the beaches are level, but the old town is a fortified promontory and Monte Orlando between the two halves is a climb.

Winters are mild — the cool season runs 21 November to 23 March with maxima below 16 °C — but it is also the wet half of the year.

Medical facilities are those of a comune of nineteen thousand, with Formia, Latina and Naples the referral directions. EU visitors should carry an EHIC or its replacement; others should have travel insurance.

Emergency information

The single emergency number across Italy is 112, reaching police, ambulance and fire.

At sea, call 112 and ask for the Coast Guard — Gaeta is a working port and a naval base, so maritime response here is well established.

On Monte Orlando, give your position by landmark: the mausoleum, the villa clearing or the beach side you are nearest to.

Hospital care is available locally, with Formia and Latina the nearer referral directions and Naples or Rome beyond.

Near the naval base, follow any instruction from personnel without argument.
