Gaeta discovery guide

Why visit Gaeta the smart way

Gaeta is a seaside resort on a promontory between Rome and Naples, and it is still a working port. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia, a fishing harbour, and a NATO naval base — an unusual combination. In 2025 it took FEE's blue and green flags for the twelfth consecutive year.

The friction is the season. The hot season runs a precise three months, from 17 June to 13 September, and that is when the whole coast arrives at once.

So come in May or late September, when the sea still works. Walk Monte Orlando between the old town and Serapo, where Munatius Plancus built a villa and left a mausoleum that has stood since the end of the first century BC. Then eat in the old port rather than on the beach strip.

When to visit Gaeta

May to mid-June is the best window: dry, warm and before the hot season starts on 17 June.

17 June to 13 September is the hot season, with maxima above 27 °C, and from the end of June to early September is specifically the best bathing period.

August is the peak and the fullest month, averaging 30 °C by day and 20 °C at night.

Late September is the other good window — the hot season ends on 13 September but the sea stays warm.

16 September to 26 April is the wetter phase, with November the wettest month at around 98 mm over 10.1 days.

21 November to 23 March is the cool season, maxima below 16 °C, with January between about 6 °C and 12 °C.

How to experience Gaeta

Walk Monte Orlando

The hill between Gaeta Vecchia and Serapo, carrying Munatius Plancus's villa site and the gulf view.

Find the mausoleum

Built at the end of the first century BC and still an impressive monument, in a large clearing inside the villa grounds.

Follow the walls

They date to Roman times and were extended and strengthened in the fifteenth century, particularly under the Kingdom of Naples.

Use both beaches

Serapo on one side of the hill, the old town on the other — and blue and green flags from FEE in 2025, the twelfth consecutive year.

Pick an etymology

Strabo's hollow gulf, Diodorus's Aietes, Virgil's nurse Caieta — whom Dante confirmed — or Eete the Eagle.

Eat at the working port

This is a fishing harbour as well as a resort, which is not true of most of this coast.

Where to find authentic cultural and historical character

Gaeta is three towns sharing one promontory, and none of them is pretending.

The resort is real: beaches either side of Monte Orlando, a precisely bounded hot season, and twelve consecutive years of blue and green flags to 2025.

The port is real: this is a fishing harbour with a working fleet, which is increasingly rare on the Tyrrhenian coast.

And the military town is real: NATO has a naval base here, continuing a role the city has held for a very long time — walls from Roman times, extended in the fifteenth century under the Kingdom of Naples, and a conspicuous part in military history.

Underneath all three is an aristocratic Roman coast of villae maritimae, whose owners read like a list of late Republican power: Scipio Africanus, Augustus's stepfather, Mark Antony's first admiral.

And the town cannot even agree on where its name comes from, which it carries as charm rather than embarrassment.

Responsible travel tips

This is a working port, not a stage set. Gaeta is a fishing harbour and a NATO naval base as well as a resort. Military areas are not sightseeing areas, and the fishing quays are a workplace.

The blue flags are earned annually. Gaeta took FEE's blue and green flags in 2025 for the twelfth consecutive year, which depends on water quality and beach management. Use the facilities, take your litter, and do not undo twelve years of work.

Monte Orlando is an archaeological hill. It carries Munatius Plancus's villa site and his mausoleum of the late first century BC. Stay on the paths and off the structures.

Spread the season. The hot season is precisely bounded — 17 June to 13 September — and the town's whole infrastructure is sized for it. May and late September genuinely relieve that.

Eat where the fish lands. Choosing the old port over the beach strip puts money into the harbour economy rather than the seasonal one.

Nineteen thousand people live here all year. The walled old town is residential.

Travel cost levels in Gaeta

What each level of spending buys in Gaeta

$BudgetA room out of season, a plate of fish at the port, the walls and Monte Orlando free
$$$Mid-rangeA hotel in May or late September, a sunbed at Serapo, dinner with local wine
$$$$$LuxuryA sea-view hotel in August,+/night, inside a hot season that lasts under three months

Gaeta prices like a well-regarded Italian beach town with a short season: August multiplies May for the same room. The town's non-beach assets — the walls, Monte Orlando, the mausoleum — are free or cheap and busiest never.

Two EU rules govern what you are actually charged. You must be clearly informed of the total price, including all taxes and additional charges. And traders in the EU are not allowed to charge extra for paying by credit or debit card — the exceptions are American Express and Diners Club cards and corporate cards, where any fee may not exceed what processing actually costs the trader.

The tiers above describe what each level of spending buys here, not quoted rates. No published rate card covers a comune this size, and prices move sharply with the season.
