Site Features

The hang itself

The reason to come. Pictures stacked several high in rooms of domestic size, exactly as an eighteenth-century collector arranged them, preserved because palace and contents were sold to the state together in 1883 and never separated.

Beato Angelico

Early Renaissance work in a gallery otherwise weighted to the seventeenth century — the earliest end of a collection that runs to the late eighteenth.

Rubens and Van Dyck

The northern painters a Roman cardinal's collection was not obliged to have, and did.

Murillo and Ribera

The Spanish presence, Ribera especially — a painter who worked in Naples and whose severity sits oddly and well among the Italians.

The rooms of Christina of Sweden

The earlier Riario palace on this site housed the abdicated queen between 1659 and 1689, and under her patronage the Accademia dell'Arcadia held its first meetings here.

The garden front and the Orto Botanico

Fuga's long elevation faces what is now the Botanical Garden of La Sapienza, climbing the Janiculum behind the palace. A combined ticket covers both, and the garden is the only way to see the facade properly.

The Accademia dei Lincei

Offices of the national academy of sciences share the building — the same academy that runs the Villa Farnesina directly across the street.
