The staircase on Caligula's columns
Eighteen red granite columns from the gallery the emperor built on the bank of the Tiber, carrying a Neoclassical staircase, with ancient sculpture and stuccoes by Luigi Acquisti on the myth of Achilles. Reached from the oval hall inside the Via San Pantaleo entrance.
The windows over Piazza Navona
The museum looks straight down onto the square and onto Sant'Agnese in Agone. It is the best free thing in the building and people walk past it looking for paintings.
Piranesi and Panini
Two of the great image-makers of Rome — Piranesi's engravings and Panini's painted views — in the museum that exists to record what the city looked like.
Nicola Salvi
The designer of the Trevi Fountain is among the artists represented here.
Muñoz's 5,000 sheets
The founding director Antonio Muñoz left a collection of some five thousand drawings, engravings and old illustrated books, which is much of the reason a museum founded to document the city became an art museum instead.
Canova, Batoni, Reynolds, Caffi
Antonio Canova, Pompeo Batoni, Joshua Reynolds and Ippolito Caffi, along with Giuseppe Ceracchi, Felice Giani, Bartolomeo Pinelli, Francesco Mochi, Giuseppe Bottani, Lievin Cruyl and Pietro Labruzzi.
Pasquino, outside
At the palace's south-west corner stands the statue of Pasquino, the battered ancient torso Romans have been attaching anonymous satirical verses to for five centuries. It costs nothing and it is ten steps away.
The chapel by Valadier
Giuseppe Valadier designed the chapel on the piano nobile, and the white marble front of the church of San Pantaleo outside.
