The St. Regis Rome

The draw
Two objects, both dated and both still working. The Ritz Ballroom was the first public ballroom of Rome, designed by Giulio Podesti in 1890 and opened by César Ritz in 1894, and it still has its original frescoes and marbled walls across 276 square metres. And the lift was designed and built by Ritz himself and registered as the thirteenth modern elevator of the era in the city — the same shell still runs.
Plus a permanent gallery, which hotels almost never have. Galleria Continua opened a permanent exhibition space here in January 2020, on its own thirtieth anniversary, inaugurated by Loris Cecchini with four site-specific installations at the unveiling of a meticulous full restoration.
The friction
- The garden is not a restaurant. Lumen Garden runs May to September and is only available for private receptions — you cannot book a table in it.
- The ballroom is an events venue, not an exhibit. It is let for weddings, receptions and galas; seeing it means having a reason to be in it.
- No rate is published anywhere we can reach. The hotel's own rate page is not fetchable, so this page quotes no nightly figure.
The tactic
Go for breakfast or go late — Lumen is open seventeen and a half hours. 7.00 to 00.30, every day, dress code smart casual. That is the one part of the building anybody can walk into on their own terms, and the long hours make it genuinely usable.
Book the spa rather than turning up. The St. Regis Rome Spa, Sisley Paris is open 9.00 to 21.00 every day but requires an appointment.
If you are staying, the gym is free and never closes. 24 hours a day, seven days a week, complimentary, with Technogym equipment and sauna rooms — which beats the spa on both price and availability if all you want is the heat.
Take the lift deliberately. It is the thirteenth modern elevator registered in Rome and most guests ride it without knowing.
Skip it if you:
- Wanted the garden. Private receptions only, and only May to September.
- Are shopping on price. No rate is published on any page we can fetch; this is not a comparison you can make here.
- Expect to tour the ballroom. It is a venue for hire, not a room on a route.

Visit responsibly
The building is a conserved interior, not a backdrop. The ballroom's frescoes and marbled walls are original and the whole hotel came through a meticulous full restoration unveiled in January 2020. What looks like decoration is the thing that was restored.
The lift is a working antique. The shell is the one César Ritz built, registered as the thirteenth modern elevator of the era in Rome, with modern mechanism inside the original car. Treat it as the historic object it is rather than as hotel plant.
Do not arrive at the garden expecting service. Lumen Garden is May to September and private receptions only. Turning up asks staff to refuse you for something that was never on offer.
Book the spa instead of presenting yourself. It requires an appointment; walk-ins displace people who have one.
The art is permanent and unguarded in the ordinary way. Galleria Continua's space is a fixture of the hotel, inaugurated with four site-specific installations — site-specific meaning they cannot be moved out of the way.
And the district is older than the hotel's claim on it. The hotel's own commission on the Baths of Diocletian makes the point: the largest Roman bath complex in the world was here first, and the elegant quarter came second.

Outlet & Facility Decision Matrix
| What | Cost | When | Access | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fitness centre | Complimentary | 24h, 7 days | Guests | The only thing here that costs a guest nothing, and it never closes. Technogym, free weights, sauna rooms. |
| Lumen | Charged | Every day 7.00–00.30 | Open to non-residents; smart casual | Breakfast through to after midnight, which is a genuinely long day for a hotel dining room. |
| Lumen Garden | — | May–September | Private receptions only | Not a restaurant you can book a table at. This page used to imply otherwise. |
| The spa | Charged | Every day 9.00–21.00 | Appointment required | The St. Regis Rome Spa, Sisley Paris. Steam room and separate men's and women's lounges. |
| The Ritz Ballroom | Charged | By arrangement | Events department | 450 standing, 300 seated, 276 m². The first public ballroom of Rome, and the reason to care about this building. |
| A room | Not published here | — | Booking | The hotel's rate page is not fetchable, so no nightly figure is quoted on this page. Check direct. |
What this page no longer claims
Earlier versions gave a "Kami Wellness Centre" that does not exist, 138 guest rooms and 23 suites against the hotel's published 132 and 29, a garden restaurant that is in fact private-receptions-only, and a nightly rate from a page that cannot be fetched. All four are gone.

When to visit
Any day, for Lumen. 7.00 to 00.30, every day — breakfast to after midnight, which makes it the easiest part of the building to use and the only one with no seasonal or weekly gap.
May to September, if the garden is the point — but only on an invitation. Lumen Garden runs those months and is available only for private receptions. Outside that window it does not operate at all.
Any day for the spa, with an appointment. 9.00 to 21.00, seven days, appointment required — so the constraint is booking, not the calendar.
Any hour at all for the gym, if you are staying. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and complimentary. Useful on an arrival night or before an early flight, when nothing else in the building is open.
For the ballroom, when you have a reason. It is let for weddings, receptions and social galas, with capacity for 450 standing or 300 seated, and the events department is the way in.
