Sutri Culture
Sutri's culture is shaped by the gap between its size and its historical weight.
Under seven thousand people live in a town where the temporal power of the papacy is conventionally dated to begin. The Donation of Sutri in 728 is taught as the first step towards the Patrimony of Saint Peter, and it happened here.
The religious layering is physical rather than abstract. A Mithraeum — a temple of a Persian mystery cult popular with Roman soldiers — was later transformed into a church dedicated to the Madonna del Parto. The same rock-cut chamber served two religions.
The legends are unusually specific and the town has adopted them: Saturn rides across the comune's coat of arms with three ears of wheat, and Charlemagne's exiled sister is said to have given birth to Roland in a cave here.
There is also a literary trace: Petrarch wrote about Sutri in a letter to Cardinal Giovanni Colonna, describing his first journey to Rome.
And from October 2026 there will be a television identity too, as Lazio's representative in Il Borgo dei Borghi.
