The most consequential Tuscan cultural export is the language itself. Because Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio wrote in Florentine, that dialect became standard Italian, and the Accademia della Crusca in Florence has served as its reference authority since 1583.

Civic identity remains unusually local. The Palio di Siena, run on 2 July and 16 August, is a bareback horse race of about ninety seconds around the Piazza del Campo, contested by ten of the city's seventeen contrade; it is a genuine internal rivalry that visitors watch rather than an event staged for them. Florence's calcio storico, played in June between the city's four historic quarters, is similarly rough and similarly local.

Tuscan cooking is defined by restraint and by regional difference within the region: bistecca alla fiorentina cut thick from Chianina cattle, ribollita and panzanella built from stale bread, pici in the Siena hills, cacciucco fish stew in Livorno, cured lardo in the marble village of Colonnata. The characteristically unsalted bread is traditionally explained by a medieval salt dispute, though the origin is not settled.

Wine carries the same argumentative streak. Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are the established names, but the Super Tuscans that emerged from Bolgheri in the late 1960s and 1970s deliberately broke the rules of the appellation system, sold as ordinary table wine at premium prices, and eventually forced Italy to create the IGT category in 1992.
