Volterra Events
The museums and sites, which are the main business
Volterra's calendar is driven less by festivals than by opening hours, and getting those right is most of planning a visit.
The Museo Etrusco Guarnacci, via Don Minzoni 15, telephone 0588 521121:
- 10 March to 2 November — 10:00 to 18:30, every day of the week.
- 3 November to 9 March — 10:00 to 16:00 on Monday and Wednesday to Friday; 10:00 to 18:30 on Saturday and Sunday; closed on Tuesday.
That winter Tuesday closure is the single most common way to waste a day here. The museum has ground-floor access and an internal lift, and is reached from Piazza dei Priori along via Matteotti and via Gramsci.
The Volterra Card
Valid 72 hours and covering all six municipal sites — the Guarnacci, the Pinacoteca and civic museum, the Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Roman theatre of Vallebuona and the Etruscan acropolis. €23,00 full; €18,00 reduced for ages 6 to 25, university students, over-65s and Touring Club Italiano or FAI members; €32,00 family for children aged 6 to 18 with one or two adults up to five people; €12,00 for groups of ten or more; €6,00 for school parties without a guided visit. Free for under-6s, residents, school-district students, disabled visitors and companions, accompanying teachers and group leaders, authorised guides, journalists and ICOM members.
Because it runs for 72 hours, start it on a day that does not run into the winter Tuesday closure.
The alabaster workshops
Open year-round, and the most genuinely local thing to do here. Carving has been the trade of this town since the 8th century BC, workshops in the centre work the stone in front of visitors, and the Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro explains the industry. Winter is in some ways the better time, because the workshops are working rather than selling.
The town's own year
The municipality runs a summer programme of concerts and events, and announces it season by season. The switchboard on 0588 86050, at Piazza dei Priori 1, is the place to ask what is on during your dates — this page does not list individual festival dates, because they move.
