Learn about Asiago

Asiago sits at about 1,000 metres on a wide limestone plateau between the Astico and Brenta valleys, north of Vicenza -- a raised, open upland of pasture and spruce forest, ringed by mountains rising to over 2,000 metres.

Settled by Germanic-speaking colonists in the Middle Ages, self-governing as the Seven Communes from 1310 to 1807, and destroyed almost completely in the First World War, Asiago was rebuilt in the 1920s on the ruins of its own front line.

Asiago's culture is a mountain culture with a Germanic root: Cimbrian place names, high pastures and summer dairies, a long memory of self-government, and a still longer one of the war that destroyed the town.

Asiago is a 1920s town: rebuilt to a plan after the First World War destroyed it, in a deliberately unified style of stone and stucco, with a monumental ossuary above it on the Leiten hill.

At a thousand metres Asiago has a genuine mountain climate -- cold snowy winters, cool green summers -- and is markedly cooler than the Venetian plain below, which is much of its appeal in July and August.
