Bassano del Grappa
Practical information for visiting Bassano del Grappa
Connectivity & Internet
Italian mobile networks cover the town and the Brenta valley well. Coverage on Monte Grappa is patchy and unreliable on the northern flanks and in the valleys below the summit -- worth taking seriously if you are walking there, since it is genuine mountain terrain.
EU visitors roam on their own plans; others can buy a prepaid SIM at operator shops in the centre, with a passport for registration. Wi-Fi is standard in cafés and hotels, and the municipality runs free access in the main squares.
Stay safe (2026 security update)
Bassano is a safe, prosperous town; the real hazards here are the river and the mountain rather than crime.
- The Brenta is dangerous. It is fast, cold and Alpine-fed, with sudden level changes after rain upstream. It is not a river to swim in, whatever the weather suggests.
- Monte Grappa is a mountain, not a viewpoint. Weather changes fast, the summit is 1,600 metres above town, mobile coverage is unreliable, and the road is closed by snow in winter. Walkers need proper gear and a forecast.
- The bridge gets crowded on summer weekends, and it is a timber deck with a drop either side -- worth minding with small children.
- Petty theft is uncommon and concentrated around the station. Ordinary care suffices.
Health considerations
Bassano has a large public hospital, the Ospedale San Bassiano, with a full emergency department serving the whole northern Vicenza area. EU visitors with a valid EHIC are treated on the same terms as residents; non-EU visitors should carry travel health insurance.
Farmacie are common in the centre, with a rota covering nights and holidays posted in the window.
Tap water is safe and good, coming from Alpine sources. Seasonal considerations are summer heat and thunderstorms, ticks in the woodland on Monte Grappa's flanks from spring to autumn, and the altitude and exposure on the mountain itself, which catches people out in ordinary clothing.
Emergency information
Single emergency number: 112, free from any phone, covering police, fire and ambulance.
Hospital with emergency department: Ospedale San Bassiano, on the edge of town.
Mountain rescue: reached through 112 -- the relevant service for anything on Monte Grappa.
Police: the Polizia di Stato and Carabinieri both have stations in town; a formal denuncia is required for almost any insurance claim.
Lost passport: contact your own country's embassy or consulate, most of which are in Rome or Milan.
