Architecture

The church is small and plain -- a single-nave building in brick and stucco with a modest bell tower, and no architectural ambition beyond standing where it stands.

Its architecture is really its engineering: it is built onto the rock of the point and armoured against the sea, and the massive stone defences around it are as much a part of the structure as the walls.

The interior holds the venerated image of the Virgin above the altar, along with ex-voto offerings from the fishing community -- small painted panels and models of boats, given in thanks for survival at sea. These are the most interesting things inside.

The setting -- rock, seawall, water on three sides, and the sculpted boulders of the Scogliera Viva running away from it -- does the work that architecture would do elsewhere.

Site Features

The position

On the rocks at the point where the beaches meet, with the Adriatic on three sides. There is nothing else like it on this coast.

The ex-votos

Painted panels and boat models left by fishermen in thanks for survival -- the most direct record of what this church was for.

The boat procession

Every five years the fleet carries the image by water. The town's oldest surviving ritual.

The walk out to it

The approach along the Scogliera Viva, past the carved breakwater boulders, is half the experience.

Landscape

The church stands on the rocky point at the northern tip of Caorle's promontory, exactly where the Spiaggia di Ponente and the Spiaggia di Levante meet.

To seaward is the open Adriatic; behind, the low sandy coast runs away in both directions toward the Venetian Lagoon to the west and the Tagliamento to the east.

The point is armoured with heavy stone defences, and the sculpted boulders of the Scogliera Viva run along the seawall from it back toward the town -- so the walk out is along an open-air sculpture gallery with the sea on one side.
