Site Features

The carved boulders

Several dozen worked blocks along the seafront, from figurative to entirely abstract, cut into stone that is still holding back the sea.

The weathering

Thirty years of Adriatic salt and spray have rounded the earlier carvings. Comparing old work with new is half the interest.

The walk to the sanctuary

The scogliera runs along the front to the Madonna dell'Angelo on its rock -- the natural route, and the best way to see both.

The sea itself

This is an exposed stretch of coast, and in rough weather the wall does visibly what it was built for.

Landscape

The breakwater runs along the seaward edge of Caorle's promontory, at the point where the low sandy coast is interrupted by the town's rocky headland.

On one side is the open Adriatic; on the other, the old town's painted houses and the seafront. The Spiaggia di Levante begins immediately east and the Spiaggia di Ponente immediately west.

This is a coast that is otherwise almost entirely sand and dune, which is why the armoured point exists at all: without it the sea would take the old town, as it has taken other parts of this shoreline over the centuries.
