Carpaccio's St Paul (1520)

The last work Carpaccio signed. A late, sober, rather melancholy painting by an artist whose early Venetian cycles are far better known -- and seeing it in the church it was painted for is a very different experience from a gallery.

Medieval, and older than the church attached to it.

The island setting

Water on all sides and a bridge to reach it, a few minutes from the Corso but entirely separate from it.

Venetian-school works of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, including a large crucifix of local devotional importance.
