For the Museo Nazionale Atestino, which holds the best collection of pre-Roman Veneti material anywhere — bronzes, votive offerings, and the engraved situle whose figured friezes define an entire artistic tradition of the eastern Alps.

For a castle you walk through rather than around: the fortress interior is the town park, so the walls and towers are lived among rather than fenced off.

And because it is quiet. Este has little tourism, a serious museum, and a market-town centre that does not pretend to be anything else — which is increasingly rare within an hour of Venice.

If you have half a day

The museum first, then the castle garden above it. Two hours covers both without hurrying, and they are two minutes apart.

If you want the town too

Add the Duomo for the Tiepolo and an hour in the arcaded streets. Este is a working market town, and the centre repays being walked rather than crossed.

If you are making a day of it

Este, Monselice and Montagnana sit on the same railway line and make an unforced trio — three walled towns in a day, all reachable from Padua without a car. Arquà Petrarca is in the hills just above.

The museum's material is pre-Roman and irreplaceable, much of it small metalwork in cases. Follow the photography rules; flash is prohibited.

The castle garden is the town's public park as much as a monument. It is used by residents, and behaving as you would in a park is the right register — do not climb on the walls or the keep.

Este has little tourism and a real museum to fund. Paying the admission and spending in the town is the practical contribution.

Arriving by train works here, and links easily to Monselice and Montagnana on the same line.

Spring and autumn suit the castle garden and the hills behind it best.

Any season works for the museum, which is indoors and rarely busy.

Avoid Mondays, when the museum is closed — the single thing most likely to spoil a visit here.

Summer is hot on the plain, though the castle garden holds shade.
