Introduction
Montagnana stands on the flat plain south-west of Padua, wrapped in one of the most complete medieval wall circuits in Europe: two kilometres of brick with twenty-four towers, unbroken.
The Carraresi of Padua built it between 1360 and 1362, and almost nothing has been taken away since. Because the land is dead flat, the whole circuit is visible at once from outside — there is no hill to hide half of it, which is why photographs of Montagnana look the way they do.
