Origins

The square is the space between the castle and the town gate, and it took its shape from that relationship: a market and assembly ground under the walls of the Tempesta fortress.

Turning points

After 1339, when Noale passed to Venice and the castle lost its purpose, the square became the town's civic centre rather than the fortress's forecourt.

Influential people

The arcades and the buildings above them were built and rebuilt through the Venetian centuries by the local families who ran the town, in the standard mainland formula rather than in any distinctive local manner.

Cultural evolution

The weekly market has been held here for centuries and still is, and it remains the fixed point of the town's week.

Present-day significance

Noale has no tourist quarter, so this square is simply the town -- which is most of what makes it worth walking through.
